Global Money Market Update: The RBNZ Surprise

The big news in the overnight session was the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s extremely dovish policy statement. Rather than acknowledging signs of a recovery and signaling potential rate hikes like its Australian counterpart, the RBNZ sternly admonished that the kiwi yield curve was too high and warned that rate cuts remained a possibility. The bank also indicated that NZD strength was a drag on exports and stressed that New Zealand's soft commodity-based economy (those that are grown) is not benefiting from the rise in hard commodity prices (those that are mined/extracted). Otherwise, the major 3-month Libors all continued to decline.

As an aside, here is a graph that depicts the cumulative amount of Treasury, Agency, and MBS debt the Fed has purchased since December 2008. Notice a trend?

Strategies employed by global central banks are working

Today the interbank cost of borrowing US dollars for 3-months fell below 50 basis points for the first time in recorded BBA history. Accordingly, many economists have concluded that the strategies employed by global central banks over the last two years are working and that the systemic risks that existed post-Lehman are now gone. Although a bit thawed, it is clear that the credit markets have not yet returned to normal. Given that USD Libor is still roughly 30 bps above the Fed Funds rate, it appears that parity may be achieved well before year-end. Does this mean that Libor will continue to fall until Fed Funds parity is met or is USD Libor in a terminal decline?

Viking Range to recall 45,000 refrigerators manufactured between 1999 and 2006. Why? Seems the doors have a tendency of falling off breaking people’s toes and fingers. Now that's a problem.How often could that happen? 57 times. Say again.....didn't hear you right.FIFTY SEVEN TIMES? VIKING FRIDGE DOORS HAVE FALLEN OFF FIFTY SEVEN TIMES!!!! So now they recall?
We really have so many more questions…..where to begin?
1) What’s so special about 57? Why not just keep on rolling them off the line?
2) After the 23rd door fell off, who was it that said, “Not impressed with only 23, this isn’t a systematic problem. Not an epidemic.”?
3) How heavy is a fridge door loaded up with gallons of mustard, ketchup, pickled herring, 2 liter bottles of Moxie and custom cabinet inserts?
4) Do any of Viking’s customers have kids? Considering the cavalier way they drop 60 lb doors willy nilly in kitchens across America, we hope not.
5) At what point does a company come to the conclusion that it should just stick to its cooking?
Perhaps other brands have the same 0.1% failure rate but we somehow doubt it.

Name of Product: Viking Built-In Side-by-Side Refrigerator/Freezers and Refrigerators with Bottom Freezers
Units: About 45,326
Manufacturer: Viking Range Corporation, of Greenwood, Miss.
Hazard: The refrigerator’s doors can detach, posing an injury hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Viking has received about 57 reports of doors detaching, including four reports of injuries involving bruises, broken toes/fingers, and strains. Also, several incidents of minor damage to floors and counters have been reported.
Description: This recall involves Viking built-in 48-inch wide side-by-side refrigerator/freezers and the built-in 36-inch wide refrigerators with bottom freezers with model and serial numbers with date codes listed below. If I had a buck for every customer who told me they wanted to upgrade their kitchen to Pro-Style and asked about Viking, I'd be rich !!!
Truth be told, Viking has a long history of overreaching and buying into having a total Viking Kitchen, to which I have always started out by saying the "... no one can be everything to everybody ... it is always best to do what you do what you do best ..."
There are also numerous stories on how some of the TV Chefs, the most prominent being Emeril, signed ridiculously long term contracts with Viking to supply their TV Kitchen Appliances and how they would do anything to rid themselves of that colossal mistake ...
Even "Iron Chef America" has had serious failures on-camera with Viking products ...
Whenever my clients steadfastly refuse to take my good-advice and choose a variety of other manufacturer's offering, I ask them to sign something that sez that they made their decision ignoring my advice ... I do this because they will never recall that they were advised against their purchase and I prefer not to be victimized by selective recollection whereby they conveniently forget my tutelage ... I refuse to be a door-mat when I always strive to do the absolute best for my clients !!!

As I have said. Manufacturers of the high end have not used Viking as the model for achievement for product performance. However that rustic look and the Marketing arm sure are the winners for Viking. Hats off to the Marketing strategies. If they get the rest right ,watch out.Bob I think they can be a full service supplier of the entire kitchen. They just need to segment the engineering and manufacturing skills to a different level on the varied products. Probably separate divisions. Ego probably prohibits that.

There is no question that Viking should have pulled the chute a little sooner. I have to wonder if the proud owners of the origianl Amana B136CAR3 have also been notified. this situation reminds me of a certain refrigerator manufacturer that refused to acknowledge that flames in your kitchen should be reserved for your range and not the back of the fridge. A few years ago, word on the street was that the special at the next trade show was going to be a free fire extinguisher with every fridge..............................

Its rather simple why they waited until number 57. They needed a failure rate of 1/8 of 1 percent. 56 was .124% and 57 was .126%. That last 2/1000th caused an Actuary to throw himself off the top floor of the Corporate offices in Greenwood.

6 years ago, you saw and knew about the problem, and one assumes Viking did too, yet 2006 production still had the problem. 6 years ago the Viking fix was case by case by case never reaching out to all users until today, 6 years later. The problem was fixed on a "need" basis, you say. A "need" basis is a method to quietly fix the products without damaging the brand, or making the papers. It is more focused on protecting the brand, and saving money than protecting consumers and saving lives.......though one imagines you would really have to work at it to get killed.Sure, this might be old news, but actually, that's the worst part of this story.

You understand the business quite well. Viking , for all of the things they do should have handled this in a more appropriate manner. A more responsible concern for all of it's customers.This is how business gets the tag irresponsible and greedy...unfortunately.

Agree with old iron man. This is old news. What is news, and what AA has appeared to miss is that Viking sold 45,000 of just these couple of models through 2006. That's the real eye opener to me. Why would Viking want to get out of that business (especially if they solved the problem 3 years ago)?

Viking has had a fix for all the units for many years. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. All units on dealers' display floors were updated. Units in the field were done on a "need" basis. Customer complaint resulted in updated hinges installed in the home at no charge. Old Iron Man

Your cell phone, pager or iPod has fallen into the toilet bowl, swimming pool or kitchen sink full of water. You fish it out. After you've washed your hands -- depending on the circumstance -- what can you do?
FiscalGeek offers five techniques for restoring the gadget to life in a post called "Frugal fix: Revive your cell phone or electronic devices from water damage." He starts with his "go-to" method, which involves rubbing alcohol.
Here's a short description (don't try this without reading his entire post):
Remove the battery -- immediately. Then take off the battery cover and other compartments, he says.
Submerge the device in a container filled with the alcohol for five minutes.
Let the device dry for an hour or so. "The alcohol will evaporate very quickly but be sure it's really dry," "FiscalGeek" says.
If that doesn't work after several tries, move on to the other options:
Store the phone overnight in a sealed bag of dry rice. The rice acts as a desiccant. (We'll save you the trouble of looking that up. It means "a drying agent.")
Use a Dri-Z-Air dehumidifier. He explains how.
Finally, maybe a hair blower will work.
It's worth a try to salvage the phone or other gadget. Otherwise, you're left with his final suggestion:
Smash it with a hammer and buy a new device. This one works every time.

The recession? It's over, says economist
Jobless claims have peaked, says a member of the bureau charged with declaring when US recessions begin and end. And in every recession since 1974, the peak in jobless claims has come within weeks of the bottom.

When will this horrible recession be over? According to one surprising source, it's over right now.
The source is Robert J. Gordon, an acclaimed macroeconomist and professor at Northwestern University. It's surprising to learn he thinks the recession is over, because he is one of seven members of the elite Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Analysis. These are the people who decide officially, for the record books, when recessions begin and end -- usually many months after the fact, when the decision is really obvious. I'm unaware of any previous case in which a member of this committee has stepped forward and declared the end of a recession in real time.
Gordon bases his gutsy call on an indicator that he says the committee never even looks at: claims for unemployment benefits. He's talking about the so-called jobless claims number that is released every Thursday morning before the market opens.
Based on detailed data from state agencies, it reports the number of workers who have asked for unemployment benefits in the previous week. As Gordon points out, there is no other major macroeconomic statistics that comes out so frequently and so close to real time.
Talk back: Are Americans really struggling?
According to Gordon's research, in every recession since 1974, the peak in jobless claims came within weeks of the bottom of the recession.
This is a remarkable research result, in my opinion. I was impressed a year ago when economist Edward Leamer of UCLA wrote a paper that accurately explained recession timing with just three variables -- the unemployment rate, total payroll jobs and industrial production. But Gordon has done Leamer two better. Gordon has it down to a single variable: claims. And because claims data are available nearly immediately, investors can use Gordon's insight to make actual trading decisions.
Claims are typically reported as a four-week moving average, to smooth out some of the random noise from week to week. All Gordon has done, really, is to make the simple observation that the peak in the four-week moving average coincides perfectly with the ends of recessions. I charted the data to prove it to myself, and he's right. Here it is:
One thing jumps out of the chart that has nothing to do with Gordon's indicator -- the fact that in this recession, we still haven't exceeded the number of claims in the 1981-82 recession.
As bad as it seems today, we've lived through worse, and not all that long ago. It was a lot worse in 1981-82, too, because the size of the work force was smaller then. So the same number of claims represents a larger percentage. Adjusted for the size of the work force, today's claims are just a little more than half of what they were at the 1982 peak.
Now let's ask a tough question about Gordon's indicator. How do you really know when there has been a "peak" in claims? Just because the four-week moving average turns down for a couple weeks, how do we know it won't just turn up again and go to new highs?
Gordon himself takes on this criticism. Writing more than two weeks ago, when the four-week moving average was already 3.1% off its early April peak, he noted that the pattern of the decline in magnitude and timing nearly perfectly matched all the previous instances in which no subsequent higher peak developed.

Looking at the data as of May 14, the four-week moving average of claims (pre-adjustment) was down 4.3%, so the early April reading is looking more and more like a real peak. (The Labor Department on Thursday said the number of newly laid-off Americans requesting unemployment insurance dropped slightly last week after spiking due to auto layoffs.)
The weekly claims data released May 14 did show a modest rise in the number of claims after two weeks of declines, causing the four-week moving average to tick higher. That's no reason to throw out Gordon's big idea. No one expects numbers like this to move only in one direction week after week. A smart investor always looks for what might go wrong.

Claims jumped two weeks ago as Chrysler shut factories after filing for bankruptcy, an event that brings up an unpleasant memory -- a memory of the one time Gordon's indicator got it wrong.
Take a look at the chart again. Note the recession of 1969-1970, in which a seeming peak in claims was then followed by another peak -- not a higher peak, but enough to delay the end of the recession. According to Gordon, this second peak was caused by a bitter strike at General Motors (GM, news, msgs), which lasted 67 grueling days. Gordon says, "This was a big deal at the time when GM had a 50% share of the U.S. automobile market and 400,000 members of the United Auto Workers."
It wouldn't make much sense for autoworkers to go on strike at this point, given the near-death state of the industry. And the industry is a much less important element of the economy than it used to be. Nevertheless, the travails of GM and Chrysler wouldn't be making headlines if they didn't still count for something.
Slow and painful recovery Could the auto industry foil Gordon's indicator today just like it did in 1970?
Never say never, but I actually doubt it. There is too much other evidence that the worst is over for this economy. I continue to believe that the only truly profound problem facing the economy has been the banking crisis, and all the evidence is that it has now passed. The government's "stress tests" of the banking system have identified the weak ones, and there is a coherent plan to bolster them.
This is confirmed by evidence from the most risk-sensitive markets. The global markets for credit default swaps -- what amount to insurance policies on risk in financial instruments of all kinds, from commercial real estate to emerging markets -- have recovered profoundly from the panic lows of two months ago.
I still think that the recovery from this recession will be slow and painful. The economy is going to have to fight the headwinds of the enormous government debt that has been loaded on to deal with the recession, and with the higher taxes and inflation that will flow from that.
But I agree with Gordon. We've seen the worst. The bottom is in.

Is a recession a good time to give homes a new look?

CTV.ca NewsToronto — Mark and Lisa Abernethy have an older, detached Victorian-style house in Toronto. Lisa, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, says it's the right home for their growing family.But "we've got to do something about our kitchen," she told CTV.ca during a visit to the Interior Design Show (IDS) in Toronto in the first weekend of February.

She and Mark were there hoping to get some decorating and interior design ideas. But like many of the people at the IDS and other Canadians from coast to coast, they say they're "certainly aware" of the tough economic times.

However, they note that when it comes to their interior design plans, they're thinking of their costs as an investment, not as a frivolous purchase in recessionary times.

"It's not like we're buying BMWs," Lisa says. "It's equity in our home."Mark adds: "Our kitchen plan is high priority. If we don't go on vacation, so be it. But we have to get our kitchen done."

Top Kitchen Design Trends

(ARA) – Incorporating current trends into your kitchen design not only helps you create a stylish and updated room, but also increases functionality. From the latest colors to the newest materials, good design can ensure you enjoy your new kitchen.

A recent national survey of kitchen designers conducted by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and luxury appliance manufacturer Thermador identifies several trends influencing today’s kitchen design -- from popular colors and finishes, to new materials, and even new technologies being incorporated by designers.

Style and Color
More than half (56.8 percent) of the kitchen designers surveyed said “traditional” was their most often requested type of kitchen design. However, designers identified contemporary and clean, simple lines as kitchen design trends to watch for.

For cabinetry, the top two most used finishes in kitchens are cherry and maple, while paints and exotic woods tied for third. This is a departure from the once-dominant oak cabinetry. Moreover, designers identify stainless steel as the top color scheme in today’s kitchen designs, followed by beige and bone colors.

Appliances
Stainless steel continues to lead the way as the most popular finish for appliances. However, appliances with custom paneling to match cabinetry are more commonly incorporated into today’s kitchen designs. The appliances that most often receive paneling are dishwashers and refrigerators.

Designers identified modular refrigeration, along with induction cooktops and speed-cooking ovens as one of the most exciting kitchen technologies. “Modular refrigeration like the Thermador Freedom Collection is gaining popularity because it provides designers and their clients greater flexibility,” says Michael Traub, president and CEO of Thermador. “With Freedom, they are liberated from having to design the entire kitchen around traditional and bulky refrigerator/freezer combinations while being able to achieve truly flush integration with cabinets.”

Countertops and Backsplashes
The countertop material used most frequently is granite, and with unlimited stone colors and designs, it’s highly customizable. However, another stone material -- quartzite, noted for its durability -- comes in a strong second. Additionally, the top three backsplash materials are tile, followed by granite and glass.

Functionality and Layout
Today’s households often function with more than one cook, so kitchen designs frequently incorporate multiple cooking stations such as a range and a wall oven, or a range and a cooktop. Appliances are also occupying islands to add cooking space. Additionally, prep sinks are showing up on islands or other locations in the kitchen for increased functionality.

“Kitchens are more commonly becoming a household’s hub,” says Ed Pell, manager of marketing research at the NKBA. “With multiple cooks working in the kitchen, and more entertaining and family activities conducted there, designers want to fulfill their client’s desire for increased functionality with efficient work areas.”

Consumer Attitudes
When it comes to appliances, designers indicate that homeowners believe high-end options are a good home investment. In fact, designers say premium appliances are the top “dream” item amongst their clients -- winning over custom cabinetry and special countertops.

Upcoming trends
When designers were asked to name new trends to take note of, many identified new color applications. Specifically, greater use of color in cabinets was cited as an up and coming trend, as was the use of two colored cabinetry and molding, and the overall bolder use of color.
